Hello, and welcome to my page! Over the past 15 years, I have worked as a mental health counselor, counselor educator, and supervisor for counselors-in-training. While I specialize in counseling clients with anxiety disorders, I welcome anyone to my practice who is looking to make a positive change in their lives. Making the choice to come to counseling is a big step, and I hope to be a part of the process that leads you towards a happier, healthier life. One of the things that keeps me energized about being a mental health counselor is that every one of the people I see is unique. Everyone has their own experiences, their own way of seeing the world, and their own goals for their future. This has pushed me over the years to get specialized training in a number of therapeutic interventions including: Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Reality Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Adlerian Therapy, Process Therapy, and Transactional Analysis to name a few. I find that being able to pull from a number of therapeutic interventions allows me to meet the unique needs of my clients and to provide the best care possible. My past clients have described me as a combination of supportive, intuitive, and matter-of-fact in my counseling style. I believe that the best relationships (counseling and otherwise) are built on a foundation of mutual respect and understanding, and I strive towards this with my clients. I've found that when my clients feel heard, understood, and appreciated, that we can achieve great strides towards whatever they are working towards. The counseling process isn't always easy, but it can be life changing. Let's see what we can achieve together.

Living with anxiety, depression, or unresolved trauma can make even simple tasks feel exhausting and leave you feeling disconnected from yourself. In therapy, we’ll gently explore the root of your struggles, identify patterns that keep you stuck, and build healthy coping strategies. My goal is to help you feel grounded, empowered, and free to create a life that feels meaningful and truly your own. I blend CBT to challenge unhelpful thoughts, person-centered therapy to create a safe, validating space, and narrative therapy to help clients rewrite the stories shaped by anxiety, depression, and trauma—empowering them to reclaim control, build resilience, and move toward healing with clarity and confidence. I understand no two individuals are the same, and tailor our sessions together to address challenges unique to you. We will work together to understand the root cause of your struggles and address them with strategies, helping you get closer to the life you’ve always wanted. Step Into Your Greatness

As a counselor, my professional identity is one of authenticity, curiosity, and empathy. I care deeply about helping my clients improve their lives. I believe that starts with the two of us forming a genuine connection so that I can best understand your personality, your worldview, and the problems you are facing – the world can be a tough place and we all have times when we could use someone to listen and understand us. I will repeatedly check in with you to assess your goals for therapy and make sure that we are making progress towards meeting those goals. In our sessions, I will use techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you identify and reduce the types of thinking that can lead to negative emotions. I will also incorporate other techniques such as mindfulness meditation that many clients find useful. Together, we will work as a team to confront the issues that are troubling you. I received my BS in Biology from Duke University and my MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands. I've also been a research assistant in Princeton University's departments of social psychology and neuroscience. I try to stay up to date with current research and use only empirically validated modalities with my clients.

If you've found your way here, something in you is already reaching toward healing. That takes courage. And I don't take that lightly. Maybe you're the one everyone else leans on. The one who keeps it together at work, at home, in every room that needs you while quietly wondering when someone is going to show up for you. Maybe you've been carrying the weight of trauma, navigating anxiety or depression, or simply running on empty for so long that you can't quite remember what full felt like. You don't have to keep doing it alone. I'm Alexandria "Alex" Cooke, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, and I created this space specifically for high achieving women, women of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, caregivers, and teens 16+ who are ready to stop surviving and start living. I know this world firsthand and I built this practice because I believe the people who spend their lives holding space for others deserve a space of their own. Here, you are not too much. You are not broken. You are not behind. You are a whole person who has been through real things and healing is not only possible for you, it is something you are already moving toward just by being here. No judgment. No pressure. No timeline that isn't yours. You belong here. Let's begin.

Exhausted by your loud inner critic? Overwhelmed by your neverending to-do list? Or maybe you're a slave to your grades? Despite looking like you have your sh!t together, internally you feel like a scattered fraud cosplaying as a human. Trying to be the perfect friend, perfect student, or perfect partner all at once is exhausting. There's a deeper wound that hasn't healed yet. Perhaps you dream of feeling fulfilled, calm, & confident? To say "no" and actually mean it? To stop playing small & launch that creative idea? If you want to stress less & live authentically without fear or guilt, I’d love to help you step into your power. I love working with creative women and gender expansive folks who have silenced themselves to make others comfortable. They are wanting to rediscover their voice, reclaim their power, be true to themselves while caring less about what others think about them. I’m proudly a human first, clinical psychologist second. I’m a connoisseur of many paradoxical things, from downtempo electronica to heavy metal. I love my tea dark, just like my humor. As a recovering perfectionist with ADHD, I know the struggle of imposter syndrome & the fear of ā€œnot being enough.ā€ I can help you feel confident while giving the middle finger to perfectionism, people-pleasing, and self-doubt. I use a holistic approach & teach you skills to regulate your nervous system. I specialize in mindful hypnosis, EMDR, & IFS. I liberally use creativity & humor to create a supportive space for you to learn new skills, re-discover your strengths, & overcome life’s stressors with courage. If you’re secretly a rebel underneath all that people pleasing, perfectionism, and ā€œgoodā€ behavior, you’re my kind of vibe. Please email me on my website to connect, voicemails are my nemesis!

I offer individual, partners/couples (including polyamorous partners), and family counseling, in addition to letter of support services for gender transition, for anyone age 13+. My primary focus areas are exploring & supporting identity development (racial identities, LGBTQ+ identities, etc), developing healthy relationships, improving communication, processing trauma, understanding family dynamics, & resolving conflicts. I am open to working with anyone who thinks they would be a good fit, but in general, I tend to be process-oriented, often focusing on how different dynamics impact clients’ experiences. I most value building trusting relationships with my clients and strive to offer a nonjudgemental listening space. I believe that clients have the right, and the ability, to make the best decisions for themselves.

Do you find yourself feeling anxious, sad, confused, angry lately? When people ask, ā€œHow are you doing right now?ā€ can you really say you are doing ā€œwellā€? We are living through an extremely difficult time, and nothing in our lives could have prepared us for 2020. And yet, we have all been asked to somehow adapt to this new normal and carry on. Deciding to start therapy is often hard to do, but I am here to help! My role is to provide support, understanding, encouragement, and empathy. My style is collaborative and compassionate, and I tailor my approach to meet the moment and place where you stand in the moment. Working with me means gaining practical coping skills and tools you can start using right away. I rely on my background in psychology to implement cognitive and behavioral changes. I use scientifically supported methods like CBT, DBT, exposure, and mindfulness skills to create real, lasting changes. Our sessions will go beyond exploration and reflection — therapy with me is not 'just talking.' It feels great to vent, but it feels even better to have a path forward. I will gently confront and challenge you when I notice you might be holding yourself back. We all have a tendency to lean into old patterns and unproductive coping skills, especially when it’s all you know. I’m here to hold you accountable and help you grow in a supportive, respectful, and nonjudgmental way.

Everyone can benefit from therapy. How often in your day to day do you have an hour where you’re fully seen, heard, and encouraged? That’s what therapy should provide. Too often therapy is misrepresented and clients stigmatized as weak or ill when, in fact, the strongest thing you can do is seek help. Let me help you through your darkest of times or your day to day concerns. There is no issue too big or too small to conquer. I believe everyone has the capacity for self-healing and change and that my role as a counselor is to support clients on their journey towards healing. I'm passionate about helping others through the daily challenges of life and trauma. With special consideration of how power, oppression, and the collective unconscious affect our individual well-being. As a black queer Liberian-American woman I draw from my personal cultural background to encourage clients to embrace and reconcile their own identities and experiences as they heal.
