As a first-generation college graduate, I know how challenging it can be to find your way. For this reason, I helped students on their college journeys for over a decade before transitioning to clinical practice. Many of my clients are cycle-breakers: the first in their family to address mental health concerns and build healthier relationships. I help clients manage anxiety, depression and challenging family relationships (i.e. emotionally immature parents/adults). You CAN have a different experience. If this resonates with you, schedule a free consultation to talk about how I can support you on your journey.

My style is non-judgmental and compassionate, offering clients a safe environment in which to grow. Hi, I’m Djola McGowan, but most people lovingly call me DJ. I’m a neurodivergent Licensed Professional Counselor based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I identify as a woman and use she/her pronouns. As a first-generation American with roots in Jamaica—the land of wood and water—I bring a rich, culturally informed perspective to my work. I believe therapy is a revolutionary act of self-care and a collaborative journey. My approach to therapy is grounded in collaboration, curiosity, and cultural awareness. I truly believe that healing doesn’t happen in isolation — it happens within us, but also in our relationships, families, and the systems we move through every day. As someone who values both personal insight and practical tools, I draw from Structural Family Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help my clients make sense of how their emotions, thoughts, and family dynamics all intertwine. Together, we untangle the patterns that are keeping you stuck and work toward building new, healthier ways of being — both within yourself and in your relationships.

I work with clients struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, life transitions, and relationship issues. I understand how trauma, childhood attachment, family of origin dynamics, and harm within our social/cultural/political systems underly many of these struggles. And I know how these painful experiences can disconnect you from yourself, your loved ones, and the joys of life. Together, we will explore the patterns that keep you stuck, understand their roots, and learn new ways of navigating life's challenges. Our work will help you restore a sense of agency and reconnection to your authentic, grounded Self that's innate to us all. My approach is relational, collaborative, and attachment-based. I am trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and EMDR and integrate these models for powerful trauma processing and self-exploration. I support clients to shift from intellectualizing into more experiential understanding of your emotions, body, and life experiences. My clients describe me as warm, attuned, and able to hold them in all of their complexity. I don't view my role as "fixing" or giving advice, but to hold, support, and challenge you to create the changes you want in life. I look forward to getting to know you!
The Understory Group was founded around one guiding principle: We are at our best when we grow together. As therapists, we're not interested in seeing our clients as a list of symptoms, problem behaviors, or diagnoses--we're interested in working with individuals, families, and resilient survivors who have trusted us with their stories. We approach our work through an anti-oppressive lens with a particular focus on providing quality care to the LGBTQ+ community. A vibrant and thriving ecosystem can only exist when it creates space for diversity, adaptation, and community. Let's create a beautiful understory.

Hi, I’m Tori — a therapist, theatre-maker, sourdough enthusiast, and firm believer that we’re all just doing our best to make sense of being human. My work is for anyone who’s ever thought, “Am I the drama?” — and then realized, maybe, a little. I love working with women, queer folks, and anyone who doesn’t quite fit into the neat boxes the world tends to hand out. My special heart-space is for college-aged and younger women trying to navigate identity, independence, relationships, and the wild, weird in-between of figuring it all out. Before becoming a therapist, I spent years in the theatre — helping people tell their stories, find their voices, and sit in the beautiful chaos of being seen. That same creative spirit is what guides me in therapy. Together, we’ll look at what’s working, what’s not, and gently (or not-so-gently) challenge the stories that keep you stuck. My background is in trauma and crisis work, with training in CBT, narrative therapy, and evidence-based approaches — but the heart of my work is connection. I want you to feel like you can show up as your whole self here — messy, brilliant, funny, heartbroken, healing, or all of the above. When I’m not in session, I’m usually baking bread, playing with my dogs, or daydreaming about planting too many flowers in my (slightly shady) backyard garden. Therapy with me isn’t about being “fixed” — it’s about being found.
